Learn how to design a bountiful vegetable garden specifically for a low desert climate. This multi-part series will guide you through the creation process from site selection to troubleshooting common problems. If you need a more in-depth look at gardening than one class can give you, this is the series for you.

Part 1 of the Vegetable Garden Design for the Desert will cover the basics of desert garden site selection, answering questions regarding how to choose the right place for your veggies and what considerations to take into account as you plan and prepare your beds. Topics include: solar orientation, watering, soil conditions, microclimates, basic tools and techniques

about the instructor:
Vynnie McDaniels has been gardening in the Phoenix area for over 15 years, teaching organic gardening and wholistic living. Some of his handy work has graced the pages of Phoenix Home & Garden, Popular Mechanics, and Dwell magazines. He’s been on various local television programs, and in spring 2008 he was featured on Sundance Channel’s ‘Big Ideas for a Small Planet’. Applying permaculture concepts and xeriscape principles, Vynnie enjoys creating edible naturescapes that attract a plethora of wildlife (and a few humans too). He teaches workshops throughout the year with a host of local business, affiliations, and communities.

about the location:

The Tempe Transportation Center is located at 200 E. Fifth Street (big glass building on the north side of street across from Forest Ave) at the base of A-Mountain near ASU, right at the 5th and Stadium stop for the light trail. Map: http://goo.gl/maps/Q71Oi

The class will be on the second floor in the Don Cassano Community Room. Take the elevator to the second floor and the room is right there.

Parking is available directly across 5th Street in a covered garage. It's free on Saturdays so long as you do not misplace your parking ticket!! Or be green and take the light rail.

Not only is this event conveniently located right next to the Stadium stop of the light rail, it's convenient to the many shops and restaurants in downtown Tempe. Arrive early or stay late and enjoy what the area has to offer.
